What does a racing season cost in 2026?
Anywhere from about €500 for a season of rental karting to more than £500,000 for a competitive year in British F4. Here is what the published numbers say for each level, and the costs that are easy to miss.
A team’s quote often looks fine until the first test day. So I put the published 2026 numbers in one place. UK series are in pounds and European karting is in euros, the way the sources give them.
Karting
| Level | Per season | What that usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Rental kartingindoor and rental leagues | €500–€2,500 | Track sessions and league races. You bring a helmet and gloves. |

| Club karting, Europeown kart | €8,000–€15,000 | Chassis, engine, tyres, entries, fuel and transport, with a parent as mechanic. |
| BKC IAME SeriesUK | £5,000–£14,000 | A national series at the lower end of national budgets. |
| Super OneUK | £8,000–£22,000 | Travel, testing, tyres and engine rebuilds push it up. |
| National karting, EuropeIAME, Rotax, OK-N | €30,000–€60,000 | Team awning, two engines, more tyres, testing and hotels. |

| Formula Ford 1600 | £15,000–£40,000 | Depends a lot on testing and the team. |
| MINI Challenge | £14,000–£80,000 | From Clubsport at the bottom to JCW at the top. |
| Ginetta Junior | £70,000–£110,000 | Car hire, support, testing and travel. Runs on the BTCC package. |

| TCR UK | £70,000–£180,000 | |
| Porsche Carrera Cup GB | £120,000–£240,000 | The low end is unlikely to be a front-running budget. |
| British F4 | £150,000–£280,000 | That is the team fee. Being competitive is closer to £500,000–£600,000 all-in. |

| FRECA | £400,000–£900,000 |
The costs that aren’t in the quote
The number a team sends you is almost never the number you end up paying. In F4 the published team fee covers running the car and not much else. Private testing, coaching, travel, damage and training sit on top, and together they can roughly double it.
Karting has the same problem on a smaller scale. Practice tyres add €1,500 to €3,000 a season at national level. Crash damage is usually €1,000 to €2,500 a year. Away rounds cost €400 to €700 each in travel. A test day is £200 to £500 in a kart and £2,000 to £5,000 in a car, and coaching runs £500 to £2,000 a day. Race gear is another £500 to £2,000 before you start.
Two things help. Ask every team for an itemised quote that says exactly what happens with testing, damage and coaching. And keep a buffer on top of the total. Drivers Performance suggests 20%.
How families actually pay for it
Mostly with their own money. Sponsorship usually covers part of a season, rarely all of it, and the first deals tend to come from local businesses rather than big brands.
What decides who gets those deals is often not the lap time. Most sponsors want to be seen, so they look at who follows you and whether you post. A driver with an active page and a clear story is easier to say yes to than a faster driver nobody has heard of. According to RTR Sports, an Italian sponsorship agency, many brands set next season’s budget in the autumn and winter. So it pays to start before you need the money, not when the quote arrives.
That is the part I work on. I make race-week graphics and monthly videos for drivers, so their page is active all year. I can’t promise anyone a sponsor, but I can make sure there is something to see when a brand looks you up. How it works is on the monthly plans page.
UK karting and car figures come from MyRacingPath’s budget guide (April 2026). European karting figures and the extra karting costs come from Drivers Performance (July 2026). The British F4 all-in figure comes from SuperHub (September 2026), and the sponsorship timing from RTR Sports. Ranges are what the sources publish, not quotes, and teams vary a lot, so use them to sanity-check a quote rather than to build a budget.
